Effortlessly blurring the boundaries of category and genre, Garrett’s music features memorable melodies, psychedelic textures, and virtuosic improvisations. Not quite rock, not quite jazz, his music harkens back to the Fusion explorations of the seventies refracted through the twang of Americana and a rich host of global influences.

Garrett has been a strong presence in the Milwaukee music scene since 2022, lending his versatile guitar playing and singing to original local acts such as Match Stick, Craig Baumann & the Story, Freejoy, and Day Tvvo in addition to his own original projects. He currently tours with Nashville-based singer-songwriter Phillip-Michael Scales and hosts a monthly open Jazz jam at Bar Centro. He is endorsed by House Guitars and Donmoyer Guitars.

In January of this year, Garrett released his fourth album, Shapeshifter. Recorded in front of a live audience and painstakingly shaped through studio overdubs and effects, Shapeshifter puts the listener in the middle of the excitement and spontaneity of a live show with the sonic lushness of a studio recording. Gritty prog-rock riffs give way to winding jams and delicate folk balladry blossoms into free-flowing group improvisations.

Garrett Waite - guitar, vocals
Aaron Van Oudenallen - woodwinds
Tim Ipsen - bass
Hannah Johnson - drums

Many Moons is the ninth recording by Markus Rutz that has a mosaic soundscape of styles, feels and grooves that ebb and flow with originals and known standards and tunes from Irving Berlin and Van Morrison.  Time and moon vibes have evidently been a part of consciousness for Markus during the past few years bubbling up in thoughts and feelings and even surfacing in titles on an EP album from 2024 named Penumbra with the tune One Month’s Time found on the record.  Many Moons is a continued acknowledgment of this frame of mind in tunes titles referencing the moon, time, and periods of time such as the originals By and By, Before We Met, Penumbra and including Time to Spare, the composition from Brice Winston.  Musicians contributing to this recording have a large part in creation of the band sound and include friends from varied times in my musical life.

Jazz Tribute to Sting at North Street Cabaret

Al Falaschi, vocals - Tim Whalen, piano - John Christensen, base - Hannah Johnson, drums - Ben Dameron, guitar

Sting is a Renaissance man -- singer, songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, author, actor and activist. He defies categorization, deftly incorporating jazz, punk rock, folk and gospel, to create some of the best songs crafted in the last 40 years. Worthy of celebration, a group of Madison and Milwaukee's finest jazz musicians have banded together to pay tribute to Gordon Sumner, in an intimate jazz setting. Al Falaschi of Phat Phunktion and Steely Dane handles the vocals, backed by an all-star cast of monster musicians. Tim Whalen of Phat Phunktion and an amazing solo jazz career is on piano, John Christensen on bass, Hannah Johnson on drums, and Ben Dameron on guitar. It will be an evening of hits, deep cuts, and dazzling soloing.

Hannah Johnson Trio at Bar Centro

Thursday evening we will be performing some jazz standards as well as original music from each trio member. I am so grateful for the opportunity to play with these two stellar musicians, the last show we played at Centro was one of my favorites of the whole year. Tim and Russ open a door for me to step out of my comfort zone, developing trust and an exciting potential for exploration that makes my stomach twirl in the best way. They always put the music first and effuse energy into the room that is electric. I hope to see you there, it is always a special night with these players!
